I've read every book there is on gold and silver and this is the best by a country mile. If you are new to this topic, this book may change your life. Not only will you learn everything you need to know about HOW to invest in gold and silver, you'll also learn WHY. If the buffoonery of our politicians and Wall St have left you scratching your head and wondering what the hell is going on, Maloney's insights into monetary history will make things crystal clear. History repeats, but with a little twist each time. It's wonderfully written, and the recent updates are a great addition to what has become the gold and silver bible. Can't recommend this highly enough, get yourself a copy now.

Mr. Maloney condenses years worth of research and study into a book for the lay person. I highly recommend it. I also highly recommend his You Tube channel. It was because of Mr. Maloney's work that I bought both gold and silver.

Not for the serious student

When I first began embarking upon research on hedonism, I decided to pick this book up in order to look at a differing viewpoint. However, after the first chapter I was disillusioned. Kupperman's presentation of hedonism is hopelessly vague and in some cases just plain wrong. The arguments he presents are weak and not well thought out.
The rest of the book is more of the same. It may be a decent book for the beginner looking for a general background in value theory/axiology, but if you are actually interested in argumentation-LOOK ELSEWHERE!!!

About the Author
Stuart Reges is a principal lecturer at the University of Washington where he teaches computer programming, programming languages, and discrete structures. He is co-author of an introductory Java programming textbook with Marty Stepp titled Building Java Programs: A Back to Basics Approach. UW CSE’s Stuart Reges has won the 2011 University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award, which is given to faculty who show “a mastery of their subject matter, intellectual rigor and a passion for teaching.”

Marty Stepp is a computer science lecturer at the University of Washington where he teaches intro programming, web programming, and software engineering. Google highlighted his web programming resources in their Google Code for Educators initiative, and he was featured as the Seattle PI’s “Geek of the Week.” Stepp is the lead author of Web Programming Step by Step , with Jessica Miller and Victoria Kirst from the University of Washington. He is also co-author of Building Java Programs: A Back to Basics Approach with Stuart Reges. Stepp wrote an online tool for practicing Java problems to accompany the Java textbook, called Practice-It!. He is also first author of Computing Fundamentals with C#.

From 2004-2006, Stepp worked as a computer science lecturer at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Before that he spent a year as a developer at Microsoft on the Excel team. Stepp got a Master’s degree in computer science at the University of Arizona in 2003. He has done research in geometric algorithms and security, taught several courses as a graduate student, and was a teaching assistant for several years.

Great stuff, but kind of weird.

This book is full of useful information, but sometimes I found the structuring a bit weird. They would spend multiple pages showing you a way to do something, only to tell you that was the wrong way and then show you a different way. Also, through certain examples, they randomly stop explaining or completing the problem and don't show you a final version. Was frustrating. I learned most from the included online videos. Also, one time I dealt with Marty Stepp directly, and he was very terse and rude in his correspondence, for what it's worth. Sorry Marty.

Don't buy the digital copy if you want it on more than two devices.

Do NOT buy the DIGITAL COPY!! They have DRM on this book so you can only have it on two devices. So if you want it on your laptop, desktop and your iPad... too bad you can't! I wish I could get a refund because now I have spent over $230 on a $100 textbook. Normal kindle rules should apply!

Overprotective DRM for typical school use.

The book is decent, but the publisher has limited the Kindle version to two simultaneous devices. So if I am reading it on a tablet in class, my computer at home, in order to read it on another computer, like say at the library or something, I have to unregister it on one of the other devices just to register it there. Talk about overprotective pain in the !*%@# DRM.

Penelope Nayudu's groundbreaking paper is reviewed on the color genetics of guppy caudals, including half-black, CP and Flavus genes. Then follows the only English gloss of Michael Dzwillo's genetics of domestic guppies. Written in German, it has influenced the hobby in Europe until this day. Other papers are similarly reviewed and critiqued. The book ends with an extended "Further Reading" section that includes the abstracts from all the major guppy color genetics papers of the last century. The book is not intended to replace the author's "Theory and Practice of Guppy Breeding" which continues where the Simplified book ends. Rather it is a thorough education in the the basic tools of classical genetics, sufficient to jumpstart your exploration of the complex and enthralling color genetics of the guppy. The book was reviewed by Dr. Richard Squire, a geneticist, to help ensure its accuracy. Dr. Squire taught genetics for thirty years as a university professor and he is also an expert guppy breeder. The author, Philip Shaddock, has conducted many guppy experimental crosses, published his results in books and scientific papers. He is currently an editor for the scientific journal, Poeciliid Research. His website, Guppy Designer (www.guppydesigner.com) provides authoritative research on the care and breeding of guppies.

I'm not quite done with it yet. I will probably finish it on the plane tomorrow. He does a nice job of explaining basic genetics and how it all relates to the breeding of guppies. I'm enjoying it so far.

Good if you're interested in guppy genetics and breeds

I own a previous print edition that I ordered directly from the author. Even if I've never made any serious effort at guppy breeding, I enjoyed learning more about the genetics of fancy guppies and about the background of the different strains. It is definitely the book I would go to if I ever decided to get into guppy breeding.

This text is required for Advanced Pharmacology for the graduate program and is packed full of information. A great learning tool, but would not lug such an enormous book around with me. It is packed with much needed information and a tool to use daily. It is packed with text, charts, and tables as well. Everything that as APN's will need in our practice.

Building on his 2000 anthology What Is A Man?, Newell's latest book on "how to be a man" challenges the stereotypes about uncaring and belligerent bearers of XY chromosomes. Tracing ideas of manliness through the work of such Western writers as Aristotle, Homer, Jane Austen and Ernest Hemingway, among many others, Newell argues for a return to traditional ideas of manhood to inspire young men "to treat others-and themselves-with respect." He reminds readers that men need "the five main ingredients of a satisfying life": love, courage, pride, family and country. Through the ages, Newell writes, love meant sensitivity and nobility, while courage and pride were about "the struggle to defend and extend justice and to overcome our own baser instincts." Somewhere along the way, though, the image of the traditional "manly heart" was lost, and men turned to misogynistic machismo and senselessly violent behavior to prove their manhood. Newell insists that a balance among the five manly virtues is the key to reversing the contemporary man's detachment from loving-kindness and his tendency toward "brutal spasms of reactive violence" (such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine high school massacre and the 9-11 attacks). Those resistant to reducing men-and women-to a set of "natural" character traits take note, for this book certainly considers the Mars/Venus school of thought a flawed accomplice in undermining all that is positive about men and their potential contributions to a just and happy society.

About the Author

Waller R. Newell is a professor of political science and philosophy at Carleton University. A member of Ronald Reagan's presidential transition team, he is a longtime political and cultural commentator, and the author of previous books, including The Code of Man and What Is a Man?: 3,000 Years of Wisdom on the Art of Manly Virtue. A contributor to the Weekly Standard and other publications, he has been a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a John Adams Fellow at the Institute of United States Studies at the University of London.

Exceptional book. For the past few years I have ...

Exceptional book. For the past few years I have been conducting my own examination of those values for which man should strive; values that are universal and would appeal to atheists, secularists, and the religious. While I may challenge the five Newell has chosen, it only matters that he makes a compelling argument. I also appreciate the way he laced his argument with examples of pop culture both ancient and contemporary in order to give context of the values he's chosen.

In sum, for those who are interested in exploring their own set of values, I highly encourage you to read this book.

Conservative values a liberal can understand

I wouldn't have thought a self-described conservative could speak so eloquently and profoundly about the erotic. Perhaps "conservative" isn't a good way to describe Newell - he's more of a classicist, harkening back to the full-bodied ways of Greece and Rome, while integrating the perspectives of more recent ages as well.

His prose is the most enjoyable I've read in a while; his mind is well organized and playful, seemingly capable of going anywhere (except perhaps to an appreciation of the artistry and integrity of Eminem, whom he ignorantly skewers, my one quibble with the book).

I read this book because I was asking myself "what does it mean to be a man?" and I found the book satisfying. No superficial or facile responses here: Newell's perspectives, while fresh and inspiring, are grounded in a rich understanding of history. In that context, he brings back to us the possibility of vivid adult life rooted in maturity rather than rebellion, a radicalism grounded in reality rather than utopian fantasy.

I can't say I came to grasp how the value of "country" applies in our current crumbling world, or how "family" applies to my own personal context, but being oriented to these concepts as something other than trite catcalls seems helpful. And the treatment of love as a call to virtue and as something that must be earned is a welcome alternative to the stagnant waters of modern approaches that treat love as some kind of mutual charity or day-care center.

Courage and pride are the two others Newell considers part of the historic "Code of Man" and I enjoyed these chapters as well - the concept of the Golden Mean between two problematic extremes is prominent in his approach.

On that note, if you think you would enjoy an approach to the question of "what does it mean to be a man" that's neither stupidly misogynistic nor stupidly blind to sex differences - an approach that honors men's and women's capacities in a fairly deep way and elucidates the differences in ways that bring the sexes closer rather than farther away - buy and read this book.

About the Author

Mike Jefferies is a chartered civil engineer. Graduating from King’s (London), an interest in theoretical soil mechanics lead to an MSc from Imperial. He has worked for Golder Associates since 1978, with a ten year absence largely at Gulf Canada. Based in Vancouver and an Associate of the company since 1992, Mike is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester.

Ken Been is a chartered civil engineer. Graduating from University of Cape Town, an interest in experimental soil mechanics and a Rhodes Scholarship lead to a PhD at Oxford. He has worked as a geotechnical consultant for Golder Associates since 1981, becoming a Principal of the company in 1991. He is presently based in Houston.

AMAZING!

This book is absolutely amazing! Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down! As a child I was never taught the language of those that pocess wealth. This book is an easy read and it teaches that "wealth begins inside of you, it is a state of mind". I recommend this book to anyone who desires to develop a mindset of wealth that will change your family tree forever!

In recent years, the conservation of tropical forests has received worldwide publicity whereas effective forest management, particularly for timber extraction, has attracted little attention and gained some notoriety. The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill� defined role (Swaine 1996).
