A Unified Field Theory of Greek Architectural Planning

An important book from C.A. Doxiadis, an urban planner, guru of cities, architect (the most important architect in the history of Islamabad), internationalist, visionary, futurist, and the father of Ekistics.

184 pp, with about 60% of the book consisting of b&w illustrations (photos, plans, elevations, recreations, tables.)

The book advances the theory that "the Greeks employed a uniform system in arranging their buildings...man's viewpoint related the buildings not only to each other, but also to the landscape...." He rather boldly puts forward a theory stating that the "seemingly unordered layout of the buildings in ancient Greek sacred precincts" were strictly organized according to a master plan. And he uses numbers (ah, how the ancients loved numbers and proportions!) to demonstrate his points.

Significantly, Doxiadis examines not merely the prime architectural gems in the Greek city-states, but looks at over 25 different sites, scattered far and wide in the ancient Hellenic world.

This is book which shows more than it tells, being loaded with illustrations.

Love Howey, but this is Nicholas Sparks

I'll read pretty much anything Howey writes, but I eventually started skimming to see if it would get better - it didn't. Maya Walsh the gorgeous and feisty reporter is trying not to be swept off her feet by the rich, handsome, and mysteriously complicated Ness Wilde. Why doesn't she trust him? Because his family made their money from oil -- and the oil business drove snails to extinction. Okaaaay. (Oil also made the oceans rise, but that is not explored as being more than a soggy nuisance.) Oh and he might have made some counterfeit shells. But then there's a sexy private scuba lesson, a sexy private airplane ride, a sexy private submarine dive, sexy time on a private island and, well ... It lacks surprise and has very little world-building. Looking forward to a real Howey novel next time.

Diving Deep for Romance

Another Hugh Howey book. Another vision of the future.

This time out, however, the future isn’t so bleak and isn’t a terrifying place to be. In fact, in The Shell Collector, the world he’s created has been decimated by rising sea levels, but the story is bright and hopeful, a stark contrast to the previous trips to the future we’ve taken with him.

I really enjoyed The Shell Collector as a speculative fiction romance, featuring Maya Walsh as the intrepid reporter, trying to unearth the truth about Ness Wilde, the CEO of Ocean Oil. Wilde and his family are pariahs because of the earth’s condition; sea levels rose in no small part to the ways the Wildes have abused the earth’s resources over the years. But, as she gets to know Ness, she discovers that the story she is planning does not accurately paint him or his family. That there is far more behind the man.

Throughout it all is a search for elusive shells, which have become collector’s items and currency in this futuristic society when shells have all become rare due to the ocean conditions.

This book is vastly different than anything I’ve seen from Howey before, but there are themes that he has certainly tapped into again. A prominent one is going beneath the surface of the earth. In WOOL, the deeper the characters went, the more the sparks of rebellion grew. In Sand, the deeper the divers went, the more death and despair crept in. In both, claustrophobia was present, but the way out was usually through death.

In The Shell Collector, Howey again takes our characters deep—this time to the ocean’s floor to see the creation of new life in the volcanic hearth in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Claustrophobia is present, but this time, our characters experience hope and healing. The shells that each of them are for different reasons, are given new life in a submarine at the bottom of the world, and they discover each other in the process. Unlike in WOOL or Sand, where the depths of the earth usually lead to death, Howey utilizes the intense pressure to create love and affection between our protagonists.

Science fiction plays a role in this book, to be sure, but it is a light one. Howey has created a romance novel and a good one at that. The plot was consistently pushed along by twists and turns, but wasn’t bogged down by unnecessary points where Howey could have devolved the story to erotica levels. Howey once again shows he knows how to write, no matter the genre or convention. Well done!

The Shell Collector was a beautifully written story

The Shell Collector was a beautifully written story, but it really didn't connect with me. I understand that it was a warning about what we are doing to our planet, and a story about redemption for one of the bad guys destroying the world, but for me the plot lacked anything all that interesting. I wasn't really surprised by any of the plot twists. In fact I felt like I was a better reporter than the protagonist on several occasions, knowing long before she did what was about to happen. The ending also felt a bit flat to me. But that said, Howey's language, and use of metaphor was just gorgeous. Thanks for that lesson on writing beautiful prose. I do appreciate that Howey is branching out from the sci-fi fare he's been writing, but perhaps that's one of the reasons I wasn't a big fan of this story.

Daniel Dobkin has been involved in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of communications devices, components, and systems for over 28 years. He holds a BS from the California Institute of Technology, and MS and PhD degrees from Stanford University, all in Applied Physics. He is the author of three books and 30 technical publications, and holds 7 US patents as inventor or co-inventor. He has given numerous talks and classes on radio-frequency identification in the US and Asia. He specializes in physical-layer issues: radios and signal generation, antennas, and signal propagation.

Awesome, accessible, and technical

If you have even a modest background in electrical engineering, Dobkins will take you on an entertaining but extremely informative ride into the engineering world that goes on behind RFID. Dobkins avoids the classical, boring, textbook-like approach that wants to turn everything into an abstract mathematical equation. Instead, he uses analogies, intuition, illustrations, animations, and yes, equations, to guide the reader's thought process and imagination. It's filled with fun facts and practical perspectives. It seems like every few pages I want to say out loud, "Wow, that's cool!"

The author's enthusiasm for the subject clearly comes across right from the introduction. Though the sentences may ramble, it us usually punctuated by some wit, humor, or factoid.

This book cuts across a lot of different topics, but primarily focuses on tags and readers. No topic goes too deep; nobody should confuse this with a PhD dissertation. But no topic is glossed over lightly, either. While this is not a "cook book" by any means, it definitely lays the foundation solidly on each topic.

What I enjoy so much about this book is that it is both technically solid, but still so easy to read. It's not "dumbed down" as it addresses the real engineering challenges head on, and leaves you with both an appreciation for the subject and a solid foundation (and lots of references) to go digging for more.

As inevitably happens, when trying to reduce something that is full of complexities and try to make it into something simpler, sometimes some important details get lost in the process. This is inevitable, and is not a problem per se. However, sometimes Dobkins gets carried away and forgets to remind the reader that the real world is actually a little bit more complicated than is presented. For example, the process of designing an RFID tag antenna, as outlined, doesn't quite work. Adding a matching circuit to the antenna, especially the inductive shunt, significantly changes behavior of the antenna, and means you have to go back and change the equivalent circuit of the antenna. Once you get past that, the basic process of modifying the matching circuit based on the principles outlined in the book does work. There are also a number of very minor errors within the book. Neither criticism is enough to detract from my 5-star rating.

Anyone who works with passive UHF RFID and wants to learn more about how this stuff works will definitely learn a lot from this book. If you've been to all the conferences, workshops, short courses, and looking for something more, this book is for you.

Best book on UHF RFID, bar none

I'm not sure if I am typical of the target market for this book (product manager who was an engineer many years ago), but I found this book extremely informative and it did an excellent job of gradually stepping the me into the fine details of the technology - all while explaining how the protocols evolved and what the benefits and shortcomings are of the protocols as they stand. Other books barely mention the EPCglobal Gen2 specifications that have become the standard for passive UHF RFID - this book explains them fully.

Wish I had similar books when starting engineering carrer

The book is an introductory text on RFID for readers with little or no background in RF engineering. It is not an easy task to introduce multiple concepts like RF electronics, antenna theory, propagation issues (including scattering and multipath) in a single book without sacrificing depth. Dobkin courageously undertakes this effort and performs a superb job in applying the above principles to the science and art of RFID.

Speaking the language of engineers, the author addresses the above issues in a lucid and intuitive manner, yet maintaining the depth and information content. The book is replete with practical examples containing real life numbers (a feature often lacking in texts coming from the academic world) and therefore very helpful to the student as well as the practicing engineer.

Even when dealing with complex issues, the author never loses his sense of humor and the book is never a drag. And within this informal framework, the author's brilliance is not obscured by his unique and intuitive treatment of the fundamentals of electromagnetic engineering. The animations are instructive and we would like to see more such examples in future editions. The historical facts are interesting to the curious reader.

An RF design engineer during her career learns many insights from colleagues and mentors usually not discussed in traditional text books. This book is full of such "gold nuggets" - I wish I had this book when starting my career as an engineer.
