Cesar Otero is a freelance web developer currently living in Mountain View, California, and his technical interests include Python, Django, JavaScript, and jQuery. He occasionally contributes articles to IBM's developer works and holds a degree in electrical engineering from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.

Rob Larsen has more than 12 years' experience as a front end engineer and team leader, building websites and applications for some of the world's biggest brands. He is currently a Senior Specialist, Platform at Sapient Global Markets. Rob is an active writer and speaker on web technology with a special focus on emerging standards like HTML5, CSS3, and the ongoing evolution of JavaScript.

Nothing more than a subset of online API docs

Really had high hopes for this title, after examining the table of contents. But the contents are bare bones, and it appeared to me, to be a partial subset of the online API documentation for jQuery and some relevant plugins. Yes, there is a rudimentary chapter on Javascript, but it adds nothing to the knowledge store of an already experienced developer, and would be totally insufficient (unlike Crockford's *Javascript: The Good Parts*, which the chapter specifically references).

Furthermore, there are some major print annoyances -- such as every code listing includes a large text and graphic image indicating code blurb is available for download at wrox.com. Was that really necessary? Could not that have been specified in the book introduction/prefix, where to download the example code? And most of the examples were so simple and basic, even more remedial than the online docs at [...] (or at any of the plugin topics like jQuery templates, QUnit, etc....).

I really feel ripped off of $20-30 for purchasing this title, cannot recall the exact amount I paid on the Amazon order...

More of an Introduction to jQuery

Found this book more than an introduction to jQUERY than anything else. It does cover a wide range of content, but it does not seem to go into depth as much as I would've liked. I think this book would be a fine choice for someone who doesn't have a great deal of knowledge or experience with jQuery.
Some reviewers have noted that there is a wealth of information about jQuery online and someone looking at a particular area of jQuery would probably be better served going online. The book strength lies in that it offers a wealth of information that the reader may not have thought about before. For me it was chapter 14 - "Unit Testing with Qunit".
I would give this book between three stars and four stars because of the lack of depth on the subject matters.
I would recommend this book for someone who is looking for a good introduction into jQuery before they move on to all the online resources that are available.

Save your money

There are better resources online and this book has little to offer a person who actually knows jQuery and is looking for an advanced resource to better their skills.

If you haven't worked with jQuery before then you will benefit from reading this book but if you have, save your money and do your research online.

I would have rated this book higher but I feel there are too many five star reviews so I'm rating it one star.

Useful overview of the American health care system

Is the prospective reader interested in a quick survey of the American health care system? Then this book would probably be of value to you. Does one want a detailed exposition of that system? This would not work so well for that purpose.

This volume covers the waterfront.

The first set of chapters provides a good background: characteristics of the healthcare system, general perspectives on health care delivery (including cultural vales and what we mean by health), a history of the system, and so on.

Other central issues are covered chapter by chapter. Examples of the coverage: the role of technology, healthcare finance, managed care, long-term care, cost-access-quality (all three covered in one chapter leaves actual details thinly covered, but it does provide an entree to these linked concerns), health policy, and the future of the healthcare system. Other issues are covered as well.

All in all, a helpful volume if you want a quick overview of the complexity of the healthcare system.

Great Health Care Book. Its not what you may expect- in a good way

I was surprised about this book. I actually enjoy reading it! I usually have NO interest in these type of books. It was required for my job certification. I am learning a lot more than I expected. I think its a great reference book if you don't know a lot about health care.

The book is intriguing about all the topics it covers. It is not a boring book only covering policy and authority structure. The book includes topics of technology, history, types of health care, the population/economy, professionals/ employees, HC system design, and the outlook of HC. It defines each subject and gives the major parts broken down by details. I actually want to take notes.

It also has a small list of abbreviations and an index. Every chapter is referenced at the end. Its about the size of a large paperback fictional book, with the same font size. The book has 379 pages, great binding, a strong (but thin) cover, with nice high quality white paper (Paperback).

It's a textbook. I HAD to buy it.

I had to buy this for a nursing class, otherwise I never would have purchased this book. There is nothing to learn here so, it is not worth the money in my opinion. All this information is readily available from other sources. There has not been one assignment which I have needed this book for.

Good Introduction to Key Topics and Proofs of Number Theory

William J. LeVeque's short book (120 pages), Elementary Theory of Numbers, is quite satisfactory as a self-tutorial text. It should appeal to math majors new to number theory as well as others that enjoy studying mathematics.

Chapter 1 introduces proofs by induction (in various forms), proofs by contradiction, and the radix representation of integers that often proves more useful than the familiar decimal system for theoretical purposes.

Chapter 2 derives the Euclidian algorithm, the cornerstone of multiplicative number theory, as well as the unique factorization theorem and the theorem of the least common multiple. Speaking from experience, I recommend that you take the time necessary to master Chapter 2, not just because these basic proofs are important, but more critically to reinforce the skills and discipline necessary for the subsequent chapters.

Two integers a and b are congruent for the modulus m when their difference a-b is divisible by the integer m. In chapter 3 this seemingly simple concept, introduced by Gauss, leads to topics like residue classes and arithmetic (mod m), linear congruences, polynomial congruences, and quadratic congruences with prime modulus. The short chapter 4 was devoted to the powers of an integer, modulo m.

Continued fractions, the subject of chapter 5, was not unfamiliar and yet, as with congruences, I quickly found myself enmeshed in complexity, wrestling with basic identities, the continued fraction expansion of a rational number, the expansion of an irrational number, the expansion of quadratic identities, and approximation theorems.

I have yet to tackle the last two chapters, the Gaussian integers and Diophantine equations, but my expectation is that both topics will also require substantial effort and time. LeVeque's Elementary Theory of Numbers is not an elementary text, nor a basic introduction to number theory. Nonetheless, it is not out of reach of non-mathematics majors, but it will require a degree of dedication and persistence.

For a reader new to number theory, LeVeque may be too much too soon. I suggest first reading Excursions in Number Theory by C. Stanley Ogilvy and John T. Anderson, another Dover reprint. It is quite good.

Some caution: LeVeque emphasizes that many theorems are easy to understand, and yet this very simplicity is a two-edged sword. Simple theorems often provide no clues, no hints, on how to proceed. Discovering a short and elegant proof is often far from easy. LeVeque also stresses that a technique ceases to be a trick and becomes a method only when it has been encountered enough times to seem natural. A reader new to number theory may initially be overwhelmed by the variety of techniques used.

A nit: The Dover edition of LeVeque's Elementary Theory of Numbers would benefit from a larger font size. I occasionally found myself squinting to read tiny subscripts and superscripts.

Very good

Very good book. First to comment on the fact that LeVeque has 2 dover books that cover basically the same topics (this one, and Fundamentals of Number Theory). I have looked at both, and this one is the better of the two. The other one uses slightly different definitions that have an Abstract Algebra twist to it. But the other book still doesn't use the power of abstract algebra so the different/akward definitions and explanations just make it hard to read.

An elementary number theory book should use elementary definitions and concepts (abstract algebra is meant for ALGEBRAIC number theory books). So avoid his other book, which is good, but not as easy to read as this one.

This book is very easy to read and concepts are introdced very clearly. Things come in small chunks which are easily digested. The thing about this book is, you can go through it faster than normal textbooks but you still end up learning everything you would by going slowing through hard-to-read texts (not like The Higher Arithmetic by Davenport, that book can lull you into reading it like a story book, but you end up learning nothing).

Readable, clear, but needs an errata page

As others have said, this is a fairly easy read. For me it's actually fun and I'm working through it for that reason. But:

- I don't normally use a highlighter, but found it necessary to highlight symbols where they were defined, because some of them come up only once in a while and it's easy to forget where the definition is. Symbols are not indexed. I have started my own symbol index in the back of the book.

- There are some annoying errors. The theorem to be proven in section 1-3, problem 2 is false for n=1. The decimal expansions in the chapter on continued fractions (page 75) are wrong (for example 1.273820... should actually be 1.273239...). It seems to me if you're going to give 7 digits they should be the right 7 digits.

On the other hand, these errors don't affect the overall flow of the text, and I'm having a great time working through this book on my own. I've read through the whole thing over the summer, and I'm going back through doing problems and writing programs. I was a math major 40 years ago, and haven't done much with it since, to give a context for that remark.

About the Author
Penny Silvia is a managing director and SAP HANA leader for Deloitte Consulting with a focus on SAP analytics. Penny brings more than 20 years of SAP experience to this role and has been helping SAP customers determine their analytics strategies since 1998. During her more than 20 year career working with SAP products, Penny has held leadership and executive positions at Cap Gemini, IBM, as well as small boutique firms. This range of experiences has allowed Penny to work with clients large and small, across many industries and geographies, and has helped to forge her global perspective that she uses to help her clients navigate the sometimes murky and confusing waters of maximizing their investments with SAP analytics tools and solutions.

Rob Frye served in the NC Army National Guard for nearly two decades, and is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After retiring from military service, he received a bachelor s degree in computer science from Lenoir-Rhyne University, where he was the First Honor Graduate with a 4.0 GPA. He is the manager of ComeritLabs, in Huntersville, NC, which provides infrastructure, remote development, and training services for COMERIT, Inc. He is an experienced SAP HANA and SAP BusinessObjects developer, and has created content, training material, and processes for SAP HANA and SAP BW InfoObjects on SAP HANA for Fortune 500 companies.
He was the lead author for The SAP BW to HANA Migration Handbook, one of the first books to provide comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for completing the DMO (database migration option) process. He has provided live training on SAP HANA and the SAP BusinessObjects toolset in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South Africa. He is also a PhD student at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, where he is conducting research into natural language processing for authorship attribution in web content.

Dr. Berg is an internationally recognized expert in business intelligence and a frequent speaker at major BI and SAP conferences world-wide. He regularly publishes articles in international BI journals and has written five books on business intelligence, analytics, and SAP HANA. Currently, he is a partner at PwC, where he is leading an analytics and business intelligence practice. He has over 25 years experience in business intelligence development and data warehousing from several banks and consulting firms.
He holds a bachelor of science in finance from Appalachian State University, an MBA in finance from East Carolina University, a doctorate in information systems from the University of Sarasota, and a Ph.D. in information technology from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Berg also attended the Norwegian Military Academy, and served as an officer in the Armed Forces.

Lots of great information on HANA for reporting. Great place to start learning about HANA views, ETL, real-time processing from BW, etc.

Good book for anyone dive into Hana. When you read, you gain knowledge like you worked on HANA environment. But technically, pdf files from sap site are the master copy for gaining deep knowledge of HANA
