So the first half of this book was spent fighting mundane illness, bad dreams, and hormones. Lovely. And despite the contrary belief, Katie is perfectly "fine." Everything is perfectly "alright." There is NO NEED to be getting as riled up as you are, Aiden. Consider purchasing a crowbar so that you can start working that stick out of you backside.

And Katie, seriously? Not every friggin thing is "All your fault." Quit acting like the world revolves around you, because it doesn't. Some things just happen and your issues are just a NATURAL PART OF GROWING UP!! SO GET THE HECK OVER YOURSELF ALL FRIGGIN READY!!

The last half of the book was submerged in trials from the past; Orin's, Aiden's, Ezekiel's (well, kinda). All the pain, torment, and revenge came back and spill over into one big cluster duck of a mess. And Katie fell into the middle of all of it.

I always knew that Orin was a friggin psychopath. My point hath been made sevenfold. So glad I don't have to deal with his sorry hide any more!! Fugging demon spawn!!

It kills me to say it, but I was only scarcely more impressed with this second addition to the Blood series than I was with the first one. It just isn't doing it for me. The plots roll by too fast, or drag on to slowly with little actual development to the problems/solutions. I don't know how much more of this series that I can take. That ending, though.... I'm seriously dying to know where that leads, and how Katie plans to follow her dreams and make them into her reality.

It is a very intriguing book. I just wish the love story, between the time she didn't know to the time she did know, was a bit longer. It seemed to happen so fast. There was a definite pull toward someone else - almost New Moonish - and I think it would have been better if she could have explored that relationship more fully.

There was some more action and follow through in this book. I liked the amount of conflict and the romance. There were twists that made it more complex. Overall, while still not my favorite series by this author, it was a good read. This book gets four glittery stars!

Great book, very helpful

This book is a fine, understandable guide for anybody considering a stem cell treatment. It was written by a stem cell researcher at the University of California, but does not bog down in technical information. The goal of the author is to explain complex scientific issues in a way we can all understand. The author has faced a grave illness and knows firsthand the type of pressures that they can generate. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer at the age of 42, a very young age to come down with that affliction. Going through that experience was one of the important reasons he wrote this book - to help other persons like himself who are trying to come to grips with difficult medical and scientific matters. If you are one of those persons, I recommend the book highly. If you are just seeking more information about stem cell research, it has clear and forthright explanations about the field. Stem Cells 101

As a stem cell scientist and now editor, I've read a fair few non-fiction science books in my time. Most struggle with the task of presenting complicated data and theories to a general readership, and the resulting manuscript is usually dense, convoluted, and packed with jargon. By contrast, Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is easily accessible and moreover is entertaining - a key ingredient for many readers.

The book is a whirlwind tour through the world of stem cells. It discusses not only the basic science, but more thorny issues like ethics, regulation, and the patient-doctor perspective. For a stem cell scientist, it is at times too simple. But that is deliberate, as any additional complexity would probably deter a wider audience. For the patient, this book can read like a self-help guide, and in many ways it is: questions will be answered, and the resources to find out more are provided. The book is largely US-centric, which is expected given the author's background.

In short, there's something in here for everyone. This book is best for those who want to find out more about stem cells: what they are, what they can do, what they can't do, how they are used currently and what promises they hold for the future.

Making the science accessible

It is very rare to find a scientist who can write eloquently about a very technical, complex, controversial subject and make it understandable and accessible to the general public. This book is exactly what it purports to be...an insider's guide to the galaxy of stem cells. Regenerative medicine and the future of personalized medicine are revolutionary topics even among the select group of scientists who DO understand the complex technicalities. Dr. Knoepfler does a masterful job of explaining what we should all have learned in high school science and are now reading about in the newspaper or hearing about on TV and radio. After you finish reading this book, please consider donating a copy to your local public library. I would encourage anyone who wants to support our future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to get this book into school science curriculums and libraries. Should be required reading for all medical school students.

Book does not respect the reader

This book is poorly written. It tries, but fails to be conversational, and in the process annoys the reader. many of the footnotes and citations are about the bad jokes rather than about the content. And the content is not developed. What problem motivates the feature? What theory supports the feature? How do we precisely define the feature? Then how do we use the feature (which to book does say something about), and what is a minimal example? The examples in the book tend to be bad, and that is really not subjective because the author says "this is not how you should use the feature but it gives you the gist." And the exa.poles are way too big. Give me small examples of how the thing actually should be used. Otherwise the examples are without meaning.

Decent Introduction to Actors

The first part of the book is on Actors. The author decided to use one giant example of a plane system to demonstrate the ins and outs of Akka's Actor implementation. This approach makes things hard to follow and concepts hard to learn. I'd have preferred detailed explanation with lots of small examples.

Comprehensive, if bug-riddled, akka story (UPDATED: The best out there right now)

UPDATE: After some time passed since the reading of the book, and seeing as that there is really no other reference that comes even close to this one, I have to bump up my rating to 5/5. Even with all it's problems it is an excellent introduction to the "Actor" way of doing things. After reading this book it is easy to figure out the specifics from the official docs or from various other more specialized "patterns" books out there.

I have to disagree with the negative review. After a careful reading of this book I got quite a lot out of it - how to use schedulers, error kernel pattern, introduction to logging, FSM, structuring the application with actors, dead letters, watches, strategies, supervisors.
The humor did not bother me. Neither did the example. If you are a cover-to-cover type of reader, I think this book will be beneficial to you.

The downside is that the book is riddled with bugs and errors. In fact, some of the code is straight up missing from the book. You can search online for a "fix" by danluu for the book's code (I also have an updated version of the airplane simulation source code - just google "airplane-akka drozdyuk")

The other glaring problem (not solved by the "fixed" code above either) is the use of outdated akka version. The new Akka 2.2 deprecates methods like actorFor and ActorRef.isTerminated. I have a question posted regarding this on stackoverflow, which will hopefully get a good answer (or if I figure it out I'll post it there). Just search for "How do you replace actorFor?"

I think what happened here is that the author ran out of time (or got bored) and hurried to finish the book, omitting a lot of details. It seems like the book was not proof-read (by a programmer) either. Unfortunately this is, as of today, the best akka book out there for anyone completely new to actors. Hope more akka books are on their way - it sure could use them!

Probably helpful if you live in the UK

This book was well written and included many case studies and lists. The lists were quite helpful from a "save me the time to come up with the list myself" but nothing earth shattering (excuse the pun). The references and cases were almost exclusively from the UK so, as I live in Canada, some of the measurements and resources listed did not apply.

Nothing new, save your money

I found this book intensely irritating. It's 160 pages long and most of that is filler, pretty photos, pages with three short paragraphs spaced well apart. The actual content could easily be included in a book of half the length and without that infuriating spiral binder (way too big and bulky). It's basically very expensive for what it is.

The content is ridiculously optimistic. Apparently you can sort out your clothes closet in two hours flat. If that were really the case, nobody would ever have a messy closet. My clothes closet is not very big and is organized and tidy, but I still need at least one day to sort it out twice a year, because you have to try things on to see how they look when deciding whether to keep or toss.

Some of the advice is so ludicrous, it had me howling with laughter. Apparently you can have a really tiny handbag because you only need to carry seven essentials (wallet, calendar or electronic organizer, notebook, pen, comb, tissue and keys). I only ever buy small handbags and I travel light, but I do not view my asthma inhaler, cell phone or sunglasses as frivolities. Many women would be horrified at the thought of not carrying any make up whatsoever!

If you've read any other decluttering book, you don't need this one.

This book is TERRIFIC! Not only is it well laid out (pictures, tabs, everything that makes this book)the information contained in it is good, makes sense, and easy to follow! I also got the Home Organizing Book from the same author. Great book as well. It motivates you to get off your behind and get your life in order. GET THIS BOOK.

One of the best series I have ever read and so happy that I now have this series for life, I will continue to read this over and over again. This is how enjoyable this series is, so for those fantasy worms out there do not and I mean DON NOT go pass this series ever.

This series is well crafted. At the beginning of each book is a look back in history/time that helps to set the story. The characters are well developed and the world is very complete. The action is good, and not always predictable, so it keeps pulling you in. Very enjoyable.

Great Story for Readers of All Ages!

I just finished reading “The Education of Little Tree” for the second time and I highly recommend it to people of all ages. Its charm lies in its point of view: an Indian boy sharing what he’s learned of the world around him through adventures with his Cherokee grandparents in the Tennessee mountains of Depression era America. We get the child’s impression of local characters, of bloviating politicians, of the illegal whiskey trade and of the casual prejudice of white people (which he often poignantly misinterprets). There are laugh-out-loud scenes, as when two bootleggers from the city undergo a hilarious hazing into the ways of the mountains. There are also tear-inducing scenes, as when Little Tree is taken from his grandparents by the heartless social work bureaucracy.

Through all of Little Tree’s adventures, the reader learns along with him. It’s a fun, touching and memorable journey. “The Education of Little Tree” is a wonderful book to share with friends of all ages. I’ve made a point of giving it to friends who are not big readers because it is so easy to read, and Little Tree’s adventures immediately draw them into the story. It makes reading fun and also conveys many important lessons about people, life and the natural world we inhabit. I love this book, and the movie they made from it is also outstanding.

Worthy of Being Called a Classic

Generally, I find it helpful to know something of an author prior to reading their work. I like to know something about their history and life and see if I can find those threads in what I am reading. Here, though, the author's backstory is puzzling. Carter, whose real name was Asa Earl Carter, was a Ku Klux Klan member and sometime author. His writings are puzzling in light of his beliefs and the way he lived his life.

In this story, Little Tree is a five-year old boy whose parents have just died. He goes to live with his Cherokee grandparents in the hills of Tennessee. His grandparents are the descendants of those who refused to walk the Trail of Tears and instead hid in the mountains and continued their way of life as best they could. The story of Little Tree and his grandfather was so amazing and so beautiful. Because I come from a rural mountain way of life, reading of the closeness of the boy with his grandparents was so tender and touching for me. I cried at several points through the book and sobbed the last few chapters. This is an intergenerational story of heartache, traditions, ways of life and ancient wisdoms--it is a classic in every sense and deserves that rating. Carter tells of Little Tree's education in his native American heritage, in how to live with a mountain, and the important of family. Yet, the book is never one that preaches, just tells a story about a boy and his family that you desperately wished had been true. In short, I loved every word, in spite of the author and his intentions--if he had any.

I suppose, in regards to the author, I prefer to think this work of beauty in some way apologizes for his hatred in life, even if he didn't mean it to be that way. The work is so hauntingly beautiful and paints such a touching tender portrait of a lost way of life. Maybe Carter's soul wasn't all bad, just torn and conflicted--trying to bridge between how he grew up and a larger truth about life. That's what I'm walking away with.
