Better than the ICEL Liturgy of the Hours
By Richard Rychetsky
This review will not be as comprehensive as the others here.

I have purchased multiple versions of the Divine Office - pre-concilliar and post-concilliar. I've bought: Christian Prayer, Liturgy of the Hours (4 vol.), Little Office of the BVM (pre- AND post-conciliar), Lauds and Vespers (Stravinskas), and Shorter Christian Prayer. I tried to give each one a fair shake, but found that they were either a) too repetitive and didn't vary with the liturgical year, b) too mundane in their English (which made my prayer life mundane), c) too archaic in their English (which made prayers artificial).

I knew I wanted something with Latin/English, that followed the 1962 calendar, that had prayers that challenged you, and all in a single book that was well-made. Lo and behold, I found the Monastic Diurnal, and all I can say is, "I am in Heaven." Not only is this nicely bound, the type is beautiful and the size is very portable. This one book has made me strongly consider selling the other Offices on eBay because I hardly use them any more.

If you decide to buy this book, be sure and check out the blog "Saints Will Arise". It teaches you, step by step, how to use the Diurnal. there is a small learning curve if you're already familiar with other forms of the Divine Office. If you are not familiar with any form of the Office, I'd strongly consider learning Liturgy of the Hours with your local parish, and then graduate up to this.

excellent albeit limited prayer book
By Advocatus D. Aboli
The obvious limitation is that, with the exception of the Office of the Dead, there are no Matins offices in the book. There is a Monastic Matins in English, but its not of Catholic origin and uses the KJV of the scriptures. The patristic Matins lessons of Matins are incredibly rich spiritual readings and are therefore greatly missed here.

What I like about this diurnal is that it is in both English and Latin and, importantly, the English is traditional ecclesiastical English with proper thees and thous in reference to The Divine. This is a great plus over similar English breviary translations including Baronius's supposedly imminent version. Having the rubrics in English as well as in Latin is a huge benefit for the Latin-limited.

Negatively, the Benedictine office lacks many Roman feasts, and there are many gaps of days in the calendar, in which case the prayers of the previous Sunday are to be used. The Benedictine office is also different from the Roman, especially at Lauds with the daily repetition of 5 Psalms--66, 50, 148, 149, and 150--and the little hours of Terce, Sext, None are exactly the same from Tuesday through Saturday, and the Compline office is the same throughout the week. In these cases, I prefer the variety of the Roman Breviary, although the repetition is beneficial for fluency and memorization. Also, the typesetting is smaller than any Breviary I own, which could become a problem over the years as the eyes worsen.

Whenever there is a Benedictine feast, or during consistent seasons such as Advent, I always use this Diurnal before my Latin Breviaries, all but one of which are the new Pius XII psalter, which is bad practice if you sing the Latin Mass from the Vulgate as do I. I definitely see this as a lifelong spiritual aid.

This Lenten Season let us firmly resolve now to take up once more the true Opus Dei established by Our Holy Father St. Benedict
By Love Thy Enemy
What a joy to discover this present edition of the Monastic Diurnal and return home to its blessed pages!

Please notice the Product Page might still be in error, and check the individual product descriptions upon the pricing page. I have in my hand now what appears upon the pricing page, the sixth edition of the Monastic Diurnal.

Aside from updating the Table of Moveable Feasts, beginning at 2005 and extending to the year 2066, this Diurnal, published by Farnborough's Saint Michael's Abbey (Solesmes Congregation, 1895) is precisely the same as that devised by the good monk's of Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville for the fifth edition in 1963, which received the imprimatur of the Bishop of Saint Cloud on the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi that year. As the well-known Dom Alcuin Reid OSB tries to explain in his brief introduction to this new edition, the imprimatur (or rather "may therefore be said to") covers that material which is directly carried over from the earlier edition. Dom Alcuin further states: "The errors listed on the errata card included in the fifth edition have been corrected in the text. Otherwise, no change has been made to the liturgical texts or translations published in the fifth edition."

This is a great relief to me, who has these passages engraved upon my heart and upon my lips. During the seventies, the Latin Psalms were updated with a translation more accurate than the LXX or the Vulgate, as it came from the "original" texts. Nevertheless, I found the phrase not fitting with what I had learned so long, and the easy flow of those phrases of Sacred Scripture. What a joy therefore to find what I know, here, still, and current. Psalm 50, for instance, which once I recited each evening by heart, is exactly that which I learned.

Dom Alcuin describes the only things which diverge from the 1963 edition: "However, the Preface, Introduction and the updated Table of Moveable Feasts (the kind assistance of the Saint Lawrence Press, UK, is gratefully acknowledged), may not be regarded as covered by the 1963 imprimatur, as they are new to this edition."

He also delightfully recalls the origin of this very portable prayer book: "First published in 1948 as an office book for Benedictine Sisters engaged in apostolic work away from their convents and for oblates of the Benedictine Order, this Diurnal went through five editions in fifteen years."

I acquired my copy of the fifth edition at the Little Art Shop of Regina Laudis (then Priory) over thirty five years ago to follow their chanting of the hours from Prime and Lauds through Compline, each of which is fully included here. Being a Bilingual (Latin/English) edition, one may as I did acquire the rudiments of Latin comprehension through a close reading of this book better than through any formal textbook. Just read tis book carefully, as it must be read.

Of course we find here the full Liturgical year with all of its special chants and prayers, collects and responses, as well as the Feasts of the Saints. We also find the Office of the Dead, including most gratefully the office of Matins with double Nocturnes, the only glimpse of this major monastic office because of the designed usage of this "Diurnal" book of day prayer. I wish I could discover the full office of Matins, but for that we must observe the extra disk on the Carthusian film. This here is a gentle grace and generous blessing to read alone at home, and remember some mighty monks and nuns.

Also included is the Seven Penitential Psalms, with Litany of the Saints, including of course Psalm Fifty, the last Psalm of the day, in the darkness recited, as the asperges grants us sleep. Other sacramentals are included, such as the Rite Commending a Departing Soul, etc.

Strongly bound in black leather, with a half dozen variously colored ribbons to mark places, a simpler card than in he past on hard cardstock with the Magnificat of Vespers and the great Benedictus of Lauds, and a new card (at least which I do not recall) describing on a graph the Hours. It is not mentioned as included under the Imprimatur, but certainly none is necessary.

Come home to choir with this blessed book "ad dirigendos pedes nostros in viam pacis."

And as Our Holy Father Saint Benedict desired, may we all get there together unto Eternal Life. It is the only way we will.
