Great book for a Sunday School class or for the home

I love this book! The current copy is slightly smaller in size than an older one I have, but it is identical in every other way. The stories are well-told for children, and the drawings are good. Between each story is a little bit of history about the culture of the times.

Great design, lovely art, good stories, subtly odd theology

This is a children's Bible, targeted at slightly older kids than might normally get one -- a beginning reader would be a bit over his head, most likely. The art is really lovely and sparkles on every page with bright colors, clear designs, and a more historically appropriate look than a lot of classic kids' Bibles (i.e., everyone's not Scandinavian-looking). I especially liked the little borders on the bottom of each page that act as little visual indicators as to what section you're in.
My favorite aspect of this Bible is that the author has placed little informative spreads in between most of the major story blocks -- two pages of flora and fauna of the ancient holy land, for example, after the story of the flood, or two pages of worship in a synagogue in the Gospel narratives. These lovely bits not only add nice historical touches, but help very much to dispel the harmful sort of default self-centered perspective that people are prone to when reading texts about people and cultures very unlike their own. It's an especially helpful thing for children, who can easily be led to assume that synagogue = my church (to take one example), which may go uncorrected in their thinking for twenty or thirty years.
The Bible stories themselves are well told, and are in pleasingly large chunks that catch the flow of a whole narrative section; the story Bibles I had when I was a kid had tiny little slivers of story a page long or so. It wasn't until after I'd been reading this Bible to my kids for a few weeks that I noticed that there's an unexpected theological angle here: at key points, the author is careful to phrase her stories in subtly naturalistic language. For example, in the dedication of the tabernacle, where the scriptural text says that the visible glory of God filled the tabernacle so that no-one could enter, Ms. Piper phrases it this way: "All at once [the tent] seemed to be filled with light. Everyone believed that this was a sign to show that God was with them." The tent *seems* to be filled with light, and everyone *believes* it's a sign from God. What actually happened? Shrug, as far as the author is concerned. Yet other texts, where I'd expect that non-supernaturalist language would show up again (the healings and resurrection of Jesus, for example), there's nothing out of harmony with the Biblical text. Odd? Yes. Dangerous? I'd say no.
Overall, this makes a great children's story Bible. Pair it with something more theologically unified, like the Jesus Storybook Bible, and you've got a very winning set.
