About the Author
Katherine van Wormer, PhD, is Professor of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa and is the author or coauthor of fifteen books in the fields of women and criminal justice, addictions treatment, social welfare in global perspective, and confronting oppression. Fred H. Besthorn, PhD, is Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa. He has written extensively on the development of a framework for integrating deep ecological awareness with social work policy and strengths-based practice. He is the creator of The Global Alliance for a Deep-Ecological Social Work.

Serves its purpose

This was a required book for my MSW program. It was informative and I had difficulty deciding whether to give it 5 stars or 3 stars, so I settled for 4. I thought 5, because it has amazing information for social work theory and practice on the macro level. But I kind of wanted to give it 3, as it is blatantly Leftist/liberal in its assessment of society. All the evils in the world are caused by wealthy white males. I think a scholarly textbook should have the singular agenda to teach fact, not indoctrinate.
In the end, I forgave the biased discourse because it was within the context of a master's level social work class, and social work is founded upon Leftist principles, so I gave it 4.

Human Behaviour and the Social Environment

This original and innovative book addresses ecologically informed notions of sustainability as a core component of social work practice. In so doing it addresses the biopscyhosocial components of human behaviour (including spirituality) from a whole systems perspective and is essential reading for students of the human and social sciences. Students, practitioners and policy makers who are engaged in social work and other behaviourally related disciplines will find this an important contribution to a growing literature which helps conceptualise, theorise and apply interdisciplinary perspectives (including sociology, social psychology, ecology and religious studies).
